چکیده
Groman, Neal B. (University of Washington, Seattle). Factors in lysis and lysis inhibition by lambda bacteriophage. J. Bacteriol. 90:1563-1568. 1965.-Induced Escherichia coli strain K-12(lambda112) exhibited lysis inhibition at 37 C but lysed at 44 C when incubated in LB medium lacking NaCl [LB - (NaCl)]. In LB medium containing NaCl, the temperatures for lysis and lysis inhibition were reversed. In contrast, induced K-12(lambda) lysed under all of these conditions. At 37 C, the addition of NaCl to LB - (NaCl) at various times after induction of K-12(lambda112) restored lysis. The degree of lysis decreased the longer the addition was delayed, but partial restoration occurred as late as 150 min postinduction. At 44 C, the addition of salt at various times after induction restored lysis inhibition even after lysis had begun. An attempt was made to correlate the conditions for lysis and lysis inhibition with the behavior of lambda112 endloysin. The enzymatic activities of lambda and mutant lambda112 endolysins were compared under various salt-temperature conditions. Both endolysins were progressively and equally inhibited by increasing concentrations of Na(+), K(+), and Li(+) salts, and exhibited similar relative activities at 24 and 37 C. Both were stable at 37 C in the presence and absence of NaCl, and were inactivated at comparable rates at 44 C. The results indicate that the effect of salt and temperature on lysis and lysis inhibition cannot be explained by their direct effect on lambda112 endolysin.

Lysis timing and bacteriophage fitness.
The effect of lysis timing on bacteriophage (phage) fitness has received little theoretical or experimental attention. Previously, the impact of lysis timing on phage fitness was studied using a theoretical model based on the marginal value theorem from the optimal foraging theory. An implicit conclusion of the model is that, for any combination of host quantity and quality, an optimal time to ...
متن کاملFrequency of Tumor Lysis Syndrome in Aggressive and Slow Introduction Chemotherapy in Children with ALL
Abstract Background Tumor Lysis Syndrome (TLS) is an oncologic emergency that results from massive lysis of malignant cells. The incidence of TLS depends on the risk factors, such as baseline hyperuricemia, bulky tumor burden, elevated serum LDH, and elevated WBC. The objectives of the present study were to assess frequency of Tumor Lysis Syndrom in children with ALL in two methods of inducti...
متن کاملAltered temperature induction sensitivity of the lambda pR/cI857 system for controlled gene E expression in Escherichia coli.
Cell lysis of Gram-negative bacteria can be efficiently achieved by expression of the cloned lysis gene E of bacteriophage PhiX174. Gene E expression is tightly controlled by the rightward lambda pR promoter and the temperature-sensitive repressor cI857 on lysis plasmid pAW12. The resulting empty bacterial cell envelopes, called bacterial ghosts, are currently under investigation as candidate v...
متن کاملLysis of lysis-inhibited bacteriophage T4-infected cells.
T4 bacteriophage (phage)-infected cells show a marked increase in latent-period length, called lysis inhibition, upon adsorption of additional T4 phages (secondary adsorption). Lysis inhibition is a complex phenotype requiring the activity of at least six T4 genes. Two basic mysteries surround our understanding of the expression of lysis inhibition: (i) the mechanism of initiation (i.e., how se...
متن کاملProtective Effect of Rosmarinus officinalis L. Essential Oil against Free Radical-Induced Erythrocyte Lysis
The oxidative hemolysis of rat erythrocytes induced by 2,2’-azobis–(2-amidinopropane) (AAPH) and its inhibition by rosemary essential oil was studied. Different concentrations (0.178, 0.357, 0.534 and 0.712 ml/ml) of the essential oil showed no significant hemolysis compared to phosphate buffer solution. AAPH (25 mM and 50 mM) induced hemolysis in a time-dependent manner. Diff e r e n t ...
